What Is a Meniscus Tear?
The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage in your knee that acts as a shock absorber between your thigh and shin bones, allowing these bones to glide over each other. Each knee has two menisci - one on the inside (medial) and one on the outside (lateral). They help distribute weight, keep your knee stable, and act as a cushion.
A meniscus tear happens when this cartilage gets damaged. Most tears happen when there is a sudden twist of the knee joint, while your foot is planted, when you suddenly change direction, or experience a blow during sports like soccer, basketball, and football. However, it can also occur during everyday movements, such as taking an awkward step. Knowing how this injury occurs helps explain its common symptoms.

Common Symptoms of a Meniscus tear
Some meniscus tears do not cause pain but usually people experience:
Pain and/or swelling in the knee
A feeling for your knee to get "stuck", "locked", or "like it's catching on something"
Difficulty bending or straightening your leg
After an MRI or a careful exam by your doctor or physiotherapist, you may have learned you have a torn meniscus. This news can feel overwhelming, especially if you are concerned about pain or missing normal activities. It is important to talk with your healthcare provider, as they can assess your injury and suggest the best treatment plan.
Do knee braces help with a meniscus tear?
A knee brace cannot directly heal a meniscus tear, but it can help by providing stability, reducing excess motion, and easing pain. Using the right brace can make daily activities like walking or climbing stairs safer and more comfortable, depending on the severity of your injury.
Compression knee sleeves. A compression knee sleeve without hinges gently squeezes the knee joint to help reduce swelling or fluid buildup, making the joint feel more stable and comfortable during movement.
Hinged knee braces. A hinged knee sleeve provides extra support by limiting unwanted twisting or rotation, helping keep your knee stable as you walk or move. This can reduce the feeling of your knee giving way and may make activities less painful.
Unloader Knee Braces. You can also use an off-the-shelf or custom unloading knee brace. These braces help shift weight away from the injured side of your knee, protecting the meniscus and relieving pressure. With a sturdy frame and hinges, they help maintain knee alignment, ease pain, and control swelling, particularly if your tear is on one side of the knee.
All of these options aim to help you get back to your daily activities without pain. As you consider which brace may be right for you, keep in mind that recovery speed varies based on the severity of the tear and chosen treatment. Some people feel better in a few weeks with the right care, but bigger tears can take several months to heal.
