When the weather warms up, sandals quickly become an everyday essential, but not all sandals are created equal! Gone are the days of flip flops as your only sunny day footwear, now there is a wide range of sandals that properly support your foot or accommodate custom orthotics. We asked our Certified Pedorthists for their top recommendations. From orthopaedic styles to ultra-cushioned recovery slides, here are some of their favourites.
Can I wear my orthotics with sandals?
You absolutely can wear orthotics with sandals! The key is finding a pair with a removable footbed. Depending on the type of orthotic you have, you may be able to swap out the insole (just like you would with a running shoe) and place your orthotic inside. However, in some cases, your orthotic might need a minor modification or the addition of a top cover to ensure a proper fit and maintain the comfort of the original footbed. If you find a pair of sandals you like and are unsure if your orthotics will fit, we encourage you to book a consultation with one of our pedorthists.

Cambrian
Cambrian sandals are an excellent choice for people who prioritize support, fit, and customization. Designed with orthopaedic needs in mind, in collaboration with Canada's pedorthic and podiatry community, Cambrian sandals feature a supportive cork footbed. The footbed is removable and built to maximize the effectiveness of your custom orthotic. They offer wider fit options, which make them exceptionally accommodating for those with bunions, hammertoes, or generally wider feet. Multiple adjustable straps ensure a secure fit across the forefoot and ankle, making them ideal for individuals who experience swelling throughout the day or have manual dexterity issues. Made in small batches, Cambrian offers premium-quality sandals that blend medical-grade function with comfort.
Naot
Naot sandals combine orthopedic function with fashionable design, offering dozens of styles and colours that easily transition from casual daytime wear to evening outings. With their removable cork footbed, it can be taken out and replaced with your custom orthotic, making them an excellent option for those requiring specific support. The overall design of Naot sandals is handcrafted to accommodate the big toe, provide arch support, and stabilize the heel, encouraging natural foot and ankle alignment.
Mephisto
Known for their luxurious comfort and expert craftsmanship, Mephisto sandals will keep you looking fashionable while providing comfort and arch support with their ergonomic footbeds. They do include Mephisto's signature Soft-Air technology, which provides a shock-absorbing, pressure-dispersing sole for lasting comfort.
The contoured footbed provides solid arch support and a deep heel cup, helping to stabilize the foot. This makes Mephisto an excellent choice for individuals with plantar fasciitis, heel pain, or tired feet.
OOFOS
Designed for recovery, the Oofos slide is built to absorb 37% more shock than traditional footwear, making it a lifesaver for people with foot, joint, or lower back pain. Its OOfoam™ technology and ergonomic design provide a level of arch support that's rare in recovery footwear, helping relieve strain on the plantar fascia and joints. Perfect for post-exercise recovery or everyday wear at home, the Oofos slide is ideal for anyone who spends long hours on hard floors or suffers from chronic foot pain. Lightweight, water-resistant, and easy to clean, it's also a great travel or shower sandal.
Hoka
The Hoka Ora Recovery Slide is a dream for tired feet, especially for athletes, runners, or anyone experiencing foot fatigue. It features a thick, cushioned midsole and a rockered sole profile, which helps promote a natural gait while reducing pressure on the forefoot. This makes it an excellent choice for those dealing with metatarsalgia, neuromas, or general ball-of-foot pain. Though not designed for orthotic use, it is perfect for at-home wear, post-activity recovery, or quick errands. Lightweight and easy to slip on, it offers instant relief for sore or overworked feet—and it looks great, too.
Supportive sandals aren't just about preventing pain; they're about giving your feet the care they deserve. Whether you need something that accommodates orthotics, offers extra width, or provides extra cushioning, there's a perfect pair out there for you!
Our Pedorthists not only assess and design orthotics but they are also trained to make footwear recommendations based on your specific needs. Not sure which one is right for you? Book a virtual consultation with one of our Pedorthists. Your feet will be glad you did!
